Nice Basket. Well Built. But needs some work..

Bought this basket for my Topeak rear rack which I already have and I also have their medium size bag that ‘slides on’ their nice locking system rack. It is a great system that they have and it looks good and works great. There aren’t many metal baskets that are available out there for purchase that really do a nice job. The Topeak basket is really well made, looks nice and is the right size. Only three things are not right with the engineering of this basket. 1. There is no support at the back of the basket so I had to modify that with a 3/8″ piece of wood and that worked fine. 2. The next thing was to support that rather flimsy wire handle and I did that by zip tying a 3/8″ dowel to it and that solved that problem. 3. Then I noticed that the basket is too far forward on the rack, too close to seat would be better if it was positioned to the rear of the rack so I had to make an extension of the clip to move it back about 3″ and that worked fine. These three things are what I found wrong with the engineering on this basket. If you can fix these things as I did, than you found the basket for you and for your Topeak rack. Like I said, there isn’t too much to purchase when you are looking for a good well made basket. If you have the Topeak rack and can do some modifications than look no further.

    Excellent!

I researched quite a bit what basket to purchase as I knew I was going to be using it quite a bit and went with this one because of the positive feedback and also it’s size. This basket is strong and sturdy when mounted. It is a large basket but not so big that is is awkward on the bike. I take it off and bring it with me in to do my shopping so I have an idea of what I can actually manage on my journey home. As others suggested I bought a cargo net and secured it on one side of the basket so it can’t go missing. If i had any complaint it would just be that the handle is quite uncomfortable when using it as an actual shopping basket. It can dig into your hands when you have a few weighty items in it. But that really isn’t enough to change my rating as I am very happy with how secure it is on my bike and that was the main concern for me.I have really tested this basket with quite a few very heavy loads and it is holding up perfectly. Highly recommend.

After a year of regular use, still in great shape!

I purchased this basket a year ago, with my Topeak MTX Explorer Rack. I do a lot of off road biking on the weekends and it has been very handy. Every time I go out, I have a Igloo Maxcold EVA Hard Top Gripper Cooler that I fill up with bottles of water and ice (weighs around 12lbs) that I put in this basket and use one of those bunjee nets. The basket has taken a lot of bumping and rattling but and has held up very well. I’ve accidentally bent it several times and have always been able to pull it back into shape without any issues. I am really impressed with the durability of it. The quick track mount is still strong and working well.. no parts seem weathered or fatigued.I agree that the handle is useless.. I threw it away a long time ago. I don’t take a star off for that because I personally don’t have much use for the handle. My only minor complaint is that it is too close to the seat. I ride a 29er and I had to raise the seat to accomodate the basket. In the cases whever I’ve bent the basket, it’s usually been from accidentally sitting too far back and hitting it.There’s a good amount of left over space on the rack when this is on.. I wish the basket was further back on the rack. I also wish the basket was on the rack longways instead.. It seems like it’d be more table / put less stress on the mount.. but again, I’ve not had any problems with the mount so it’s obviously fine.Still, for its durability and usefulness to me, I felt it really deserved 5 stars, I really do like it.

Good casual cargo carrier. Just be careful not to tip over with it in place.

I’ve had this basket for about a month and it works great as a place to toss stuff I don’t want to (or can’t) carry on my body. Rather than fuss with bags and straps, I can just drop my laptop bag and my bike lock in there and leave the house. I was hoping it’d be as handy as the backseat of my car and I wasn’t disappointed.I was concerned about the size and how it would look, proportionally, on my Trek 7.2. But it looks great. The size is large enough to be practical for a little grocery shopping.Topeak’s system for sliding the basket on and off was one of the reasons I chose this basket and rack. It’s quite handy to be able to carry things to or from the bike. Sliding it into its track is only easy when the bike is fixed to something, though. Some complaints:I didn’t appreciate from the photos that the height of the basket would make it impossible for me to get on and off the bike by just swinging my leg over the rear wheel, as usual. So I had to learn a new technique (move my knee over the crossbar near the stem, then move my foot over near the seat). A possible problem for people with certain kinds of joint trouble, I wonder? The word I’d use to describe the wire handle is “decorative.” It seems to strain even to just support the basket’s own weight. I took it off because I’d become accustomed to carrying the basket by its top rim. The basket is also too heavy to casually carry it around, so don’t plan on taking it inside the grocery store or the farmers’ market with you.Because the basket is so tall and wide (and heavy), it wobbles a bit when it’s got a non-trivial load. It’s still plenty secure on its (plastic) mounting bracket. Nonetheless, when I’ve got something more substantial in there than my laptop bag, I tie it down to the rack with a couple of bungees as insurance. Which I would have done anyway, just to prevent things from falling out of the open top.AND because the basket is so tall and heavy — especially if you’ve got a gallon jug of milk in there — the bike is more susceptible to tipping over…possibly with you on it! It hasn’t affected my bike’s handling and safety in the least when I’m in motion. But when the bike’s at a dead stop, I know that if I carelessly lean it too far (like when pulling it out of the rack where I’ve locked it, or if I try to mount or dismount too quickly) I might wind up on the pavement…unhurt, thanks to my helmet and gloves, but hoping that nobody saw that. After a month, I’ve just learned not to be careless when the bike is stopped. I keep both hands on the brakes and I’m extra-careful when getting on or off. I no longer consider it a problem. I might think differently if I were riding this every morning and night on a crowded city street. I might have considered panniers (which sit low to the ground) instead. At first, I thought it strange that the basket and its mounting bracket were separate retail items (though sold together). I was also disappointed that the bracket was plastic instead of something that could withstand abuse. But now, I _suspect_ that the system is designed so that if anything’s going to break or bend, it’ll be the $15 thing that’s easy for any consumer to replace, and not the $45 basket or something on the $60 rack. I’ve had to replace the bracket, but the basket itself and the rack didn’t suffer any damage at all after falling over a few times. To address a complaint in other reviews: I don’t think the basket’s wire mesh is flimsy at all. Nothing’s bent or broken in the month I’ve had it, even after falling over a couple of times. In fact, I rather like the basket’s wire design overall. It offers many attachment points for lights and reflectors, and it’s quite bungee-friendly. When I park my bike at the commuter rail lot, I can feed a lock cable through my helmet and the basket to join my U-lock, thus securing both basket and helmet.Despite falling with this thing on my bike, I’m very happy with it. I wanted a “rear seat” for my bike that would let me just drop things into it and take off. This basket makes my bike a lot more useful and fun.

Perfect for those quick trips to the store.

After a month of use, I’ve really come to like this basket and the Topeak quick-release system. I use it a couple of times a week for quick runs to the store, and it has served its purpose well. I see where others have mentioned the handle bends too easily; I haven’t had this problem and I’ve loaded it up. It’s so much easier to use this system for quick shopping trips that, weather permitting, I have no excuse not to take my bike. I also have the Topeak Trolley Tote and I much prefer this basket – it’s lots easier and quicker to use.It can be cumbersome to reattach the basket to your rack when it’s full. To get around this, I carry a reusable shopping bag in the store along with the basket. I put my groceries in the bag at checkout, then when back out at the bike, set the bag aside, put the basket on my bike, and then put the bag in the basket. It can be a pain to get on your bike with the basket loaded, but after a few tries it’s no problem. You will want to get the cargo net to go with this unless you like your stuff flying around when you hit a bump, but that’s true of any basket. Others have mentioned an issue with seat clearance, but I have plenty of room on my bike (Giant Escape 1). So far, a great purchase.

Perfect for anyone who commutes to work and runs errands on their bike

I love this basket and wish I had bought it a long time ago. I had the bike rack for 6 years, and used to just secure my backpack and stuff to it with bungee cords. This basket changed my life. I bike everywhere and also like to buy groceries, etc on my bike. It’s so great to be able to fill up the basket and not have to worry about how to secure it to the bike rack. The quick-release works great. The basket will fit on any bike; if it is too close to the seat, you just need to slide the rack back. Just be realistic about how much the basket can hold (about 20 pounds or so). Only downside is the handle: it falls off constantly and you can’t use it if there’s more than about 10 pounds in the basket (more than that, you need to hold the basket by the sides or bottom). After about 14 months of hard daily use it’s finally showing some wear, but I definitely plan to buy another one after this one kicks.

Nice basket and connection system, but fitment issues for some.

This basket seems relatively well made. Its a nice rubberized mesh. The handle though is just a bare wire that you wouldn’t want to carry any weight with it. The locking system is nice as is the slide in mtx rails keep it pretty secure. I threw a dumbell in there as a test load and it didn’t shift at all.The real trouble is you can have a lot of fitment issues depending on the geometry of your bike and rack. Its almost impossible to know if this will work for you without just trying it. The shorter your inseam relative to your wheel size, the more likely this is going to be an issue. I’d go as far to say the large majority of people trying to use this with their beam racks will probably have and issue unless you have really long legs. If you have a wheel mounted rack you’re probably more likely to be okay.It bumps up against the back of my seat and is a little uncomfortable. I really wish they had included a spacer to move the rack back a few inches for people with low clearance. Also an additional slider for the back part of the basket would have been nice. Luckily I can solve this with my 3d printer, but otherwise I’d be looking at a different solution. Topeak really should step it up and make a mount kit specific to this basket rather than just include their generic basket mount kit.

Cananatilla de excelente material a un buen precio.

Una canastilla de buenos acabados y resistencia para colocar en el Rack de tu bicicleta, en posteriores días daré mi opinión al respecto de la durabilidad de esta canastilla.

    Excellent bike accessory for school

Exactly what I wanted for my middle schooler’s bike. Granted you need to buy a Topeak MTX rack, but it is great that you can easily slide on/off the basket. I wanted a big enough basket that can hold a middle schooler’s backpack (which is big and heavy nowadays that kids need to carry their books, lunch, plus a decently heavy chomebook every day). On the weekends, my son can slide it off and not bother with the additional load. I needed to buy the extra-long mounting arms to get it to work with his bike (a size M adult bike). Without the extra long arms, the basket sat too close to the bike seat.Like other reviewers, the handle is trash–it is too flimsy to use it like a hand basket, and it will just rattle nonstop when the basket is on the bike. That’s fine for my kid’s usage, as he won’t need it as a hand basket.

    Rarely rate anything but

I must say worth the money .! Comes off and on simply and can now convert my mountain bike into a shopping bike . Good quality and great design!

    My second topeak basket

I used to have this basket when I commuted to work. It lasted a few years before it started to break down. Now I have it on my commuter bike and it should last a long time due to non-frequent use.
