What Our Gearhead Experts Are Saying: "I switched to the GRX RX812 for my 1x gravel rig and haven’t looked back. The clutch keeps my chain tight over chunky descents, and shifting stays smooth even when my drivetrain’s covered in dust and mud. It’s basically MTB toughness adapted perfectly for drop bars."From washboard descents to rocky doubletrack climbs, we rely on the Shimano GRX RX812 Rear Derailleur to keep our shifting crisp and our chain quiet. Purpose-built for gravel and adventure riding, this derailleur brings proven Shimano MTB tech into the drop-bar world, so we can charge harder without worrying about dropped chains or ghost shifts. The RX812 uses a clutch-based Shadow RD+ design to maintain consistent chain tension, especially when the terrain gets rough. It's optimized for a 1x11 drivetrain with an 11–42t cassette range, giving us simplicity up front and plenty of gearing in the back. Whether we’re racing a gravel grinder or tackling a weeklong bikepacking route, this derailleur delivers smooth, reliable performance with zero drama.

Wonderful for 1×11
My do-it-all bicycle now has one of these and an 11-40t cassette. I love it.

Great tech, but GRX components could use more detailed descriptions by Shimano.
Solid gravel-specific derailleur. Previously was running an Ultegra RX mounted on a Wolf Tooth Roadlink DM on a SRAM 10-42 1x setup. I bought the GRX to use in conjunction with an extended cage by Garbaruk in order to boost my gear range with Garbaruk’s 10-50 cassette for 500% range on 1x. The mullet setup works great for bikepacking all terrain on a gravel bike in northern Michigan and I plan to take the GRX mullet rig on a self-supported trip bikepacking from Detroit to Duluth via Isle Royal next spring. My only knock against the GRX would be that Shimano doesn’t make it very clear which GRX derailleur is for which use (1x,2x etc.). I did have to order this 812 model after mistakenly getting the 810 which is not recommended for 1x setups. I found this information after extensive digging on forums rather than in a readily available spot on this site or Shimano’s. So really just a gripe with descriptions of the components rather than the tech itself.

Built like a tank.
Solid derailleur, replaced the Ultegra on my road bike in order to handle switch from an 11-34 cassette to an 11-42. Adjustment screws are easy to reach and well labeled.
