    Pretty good but not perfect.

Over the past five decades, I’ve owned quite a few chain tools ranging from absymal to pretty good but not perfect. (I have not found one yet that is perfect, but the search continues.) This one, I am happy to report falls into the “pretty good but not perfect” end of the spectrum. It has a good handle, the threads are fine pitch (this helps when pushing out a tough chain pin), and it will handle just about any chain width. There is storage space in the handle for a chain hook — something that I have always managed to get by without, but if you have one, it does make things easier. Now that I have a chain hook handy when I need it, it will get a lot of use. The hollow screw for a backing plate is a clever idea for handling different chain widths, but it does have a drawback. The chain pin that you are driving out goes inside the hollow screw where it cannot be seen. Being able to see the pin is handy when trying to drive out the pin just far enough to split the chain. This isn’t an issue of you are going to replace the pin with a new one or with a Quick Link, but you are planning to re-use that pin when reassembling the chain, you don’t want to drive it out completely. I was able to do so successfully by feel, but it’s nice to have a visual back up — something you don’t get with this design. When reassembling a chain, I had to be very carefully in getting things lined up right, or the chain pin can get pushed sideways. This is not good and prevents you from reassembling the chain until you straighten the alignment of the pin. I’ve never had this problem with any other chain tool so it caught me off guard when it happened with this one. But I found that if I was careful in aligning everything, I could avoid this problem. This chain tool does come with instructions. They are obviously translated from another language as the sentence structure and word choice are odd, but overall, they do explain how to use the tool. (Not an issue for me, but for someone who has never used a chain tool before, this is useful information.) One thing missing from the instructions is how to loosen a stiff link after assumbling it. For that information, you will have to look elsewhere. Imperfections notwithstanding, this is chain tool that does the job it was intended for.

Perfect for the Home Bike Mechanic

This is not a professional, shop quality tool. That being said, it works perfectly and would be an excellent addition to any home bike mechanic’s toolbox. I’ve used it twice now to break single speed (1/8″) chains and it worked perfectly. Two thumbs up!

Good, inexpensive alternative to the name-brands

I do all my own bike repairs and maintenance in my garage. I don’t want to spend a fortune on tools, but there are some basics I need occasionally. I don’t want to mortage our home to buy them, so inexpensive alternatives are a must. This little chain breaker does the job. I’ve used it to replace four or five chains so far. I haven’t had any problems pushing out the old pins or installing the new ones. Works like a charm.

    You should buy this item.

This does the trick! It has come in handy many times and is easy to use. If you watch videos on how to use these properly, you’ll have no problem keeping this invaluable tool in good condition for a long time. The end cap that keeps the extra nib and chain holder is loose and will fall off, possibly losing both. A small strip of electrical tape will solve that. :)This item has pulled my fat out of the fire a couple of times.

    Great budget tool!

This works great! I’ve been using a lesser quality tool for several years and it worked ok. This tool makes link removals so easy you barley notice the snap of the pin. Great price and quality, highly recommend!!

    Adequate For Occasional Applications

Just what could realistically be expected for the money, which is to say good. While it wouldn’t stand against the rigors of bike shop duty, it’s fine for the home mechanic who’s tired of resorting to his multi-tool to break a few links off a new chain when it’s time to replace same on one of his bikes. If one does bend the pin extractor, an extra is provided. No disappointment here, and in a way, that is a glowing review!
