just two minor things, one, it’s a little bigger then I expected, I have E-bike and the motor is in the rear wheel. found it very difficult to use it because of the shortness of the spokes. Secondly, I found out the tension by using it on another spoke. it was 32, in the paper chart either I am not understanding it, but couldn’t find/or figure out what is the correct tension. Owell, I bought it just in case, because I have a lot of cyclist friends, it now became a nice tool other can borrow. the Coles note version, good product if you know what you are doing.

BLUF: Don’t worry about the calibration (if you are a weekend repair person). It allows you to tension a spoke to the same/average tension of the surrounding spoke. The assumption is that the tension of the good spokes are within specification.Here’s the Story:As the headline says, I am a YouTube Repairman. I watch YouTube videos to see if I can save money doing my own repairs. The original repair was for a broken spoke on my bike. I was going to have a local shop do the repair but it was going to cost me about $50 with a caveat from the repair shop, “It could be more if the rim is damaged”. So off I went to YouTube to find some helpful ‘How To’. Although the parts would cost me more than having the local repair fix it, I thought over the long run it would pay out.Well, it paid out quicker than I thought. As I was waiting for the parts to come in, I started to do a visual check on my families bike. One of the bikes had a rear wheel that had a really bad wobble. The brakes were scrapping against the rim as it wobbled. (I am amazed my son didn’t say anything to me. It must have been hard to peddle) I used the Tension tool to check each one of the spoke, which was ranging from 20-24, and found a spoke that was at 5. I tighten the spoke until it read about 22-23 and low an behold, the wobble was almost gone. Watching some of the How to Videos, I think the slight wobble I can see, is within the 1mm. Truing at my local shop is about $40.I know people are concerned about calibration of the tension tool. I would not worry unless you are rebuilding the tire and you are really concern about staying within specs of the rim manufacturer. Myself, I just want the tool to give me consent readings so I can get the spoke in the same range as the other spokes. I ride a bike for recreation and low impact aerobic exercise, so perfection is not at the top of the list. So this tool is good enough at $26 vice the other name brand tool at $90. Don’t get me wrong, I like the name brand tool and have watch many of their How To Youtube Videos but some of their tools are priced for repair shops and enthusiast.So I saved $50 for repair my own bike spoke and $40 on my son bike = $90. Total cost of my tools, to include a 75 box of DT Champion Spokes = $100. I also learned a new basic skill.

Just like the blue TM-1
This tool is a copy of the blue TM-1.Its user manual literally has the same conversion table (except the blue logo) and the exact same images.Therefore, you can use the online Wheel Tension App of the TM-1 company as is.The tool feels sturdy and gives repeatable measures.I have yet to compare its readings to a real TM-1 however, to check if it’s correctly calibrated.

I used this for my own bicycle. Worked great. Easy to use and consistent. This is one-third the cost of Park Tool version. I would recommend Park Tool if you are running a bike shop dealing with many bicycles, but this one to deal with a few personal bicycles. This is most likely not shop-grade and may loose accuracy after repetitive day-after-another use.Update after using this on 3 bicycles: Still works well. There is some warping in the handle and the corner has grinded due to rubbing. I still recommend this but will not last if you keep using it repetitively in the long run. Consider Park Tool version for long term usage.

I can’t speak for the overall accuracy of the meter as I am not building wheels, however y needed this to replace a broken spoke and make sure that the rest of the spokes were about the same tension, and for that, this worked perfectly. The fit and finish seems fine for the price point in which they are selling for, I don’t see anyway to zero or for calibration, but again, that’s okay for what I am using this for. If I were building wheels from scratch, then I would opt for the Park tool.

Essential, easy, cost-effective tool for bike wheel maintenance
I slowly started truing my own wheels and learned a few key tools are required to do it right. One is a spoke tension meter, which I’ve used more often than expected. This tool is easy to use and cost effective, compared to name brands. I compared my readings to the ones with the famous blue one and they were very close.After riding my new bike for 100 miles or so, I decided to check the spokes and then do a truing. To my surprise, quite a few spokes were way too loose. I used the excellent tutorial and online software offered by Park Tool to map and correct all spoke tensions before truing. The other tool I ended up getting and recommend is a dishing tool. My new bike was within tolerance, but my older bike was way out, most likely because of being trued several times at bike shops without being dished, or having an off centered truing stand, who knows.

Saved me from having to buy a new wheelset!
So far so good and this probably saved me from some serious injuries in the near future. I had a slight wobble to my front wheel, a carbon WTB CZR i30 that I wanted to correct before it caused any damage to my wheel. I purchased this to aid in truing the wheel, but also make sure my tensions were at least close to spec. Well, they were WAY under tensioned. Reading around 50KgF and WTB says between 110 and 120 KgF. I found it hard to believe these wheels were that out of spec for being so new, so I went around and tested 3 other wheelsets I had and all of them were reading roughly between 90 and 110 KgF, so I figured this tool was calibrated enough to get me close. So I began tightening. Quarter turn all the way around, relieve the rotational stress on the spokes, do another quarter turn all the way around, relieve the stress, rinse and repeat until I got close to my recommended numbers. Without this, I would have never thought to tighten the spokes up as much as I did. I would have trued the wheelset and left it as is which would have likely cracked my wheel at some point if I hit a turn or lateral force enough. I am now sitting right around 100 KgF on my wheels and the spokes are nice and tight, similar to my other wheelsets, so I feel much better about them.Some people complained that the pressed in pin that compresses the spoke fell out, but I did not experience this. My pin has remained tight with no play after a few hours of use. I have never used the more expensive alternative so I cannot compare, nor can I comment on its true accuracy as I dont have a way of measuring that accuracy, but it does seem to be accurate enough to trust and get me closer than I was! I have a few brand new wheelsets on some other bikes that have minimal hours on them, so I can assume those spokes are still within tension range, so I tested on those and got acceptable numbers according to the chart, so that leads me to believe this tool is fairly accurate. These carbon wheels were just never tensioned properly by the builder or they settled/stretched and needed to be retightened. Either way, this tool go me up and running!It comes with a chart that makes it compatible with many types of spoke shapes and sizes once you learn how to read it!The build quality seems to be pretty nice! Its all aluminum and seems as if it will hold up pretty well over time.If you have the budget for it and want the piece of mind, get the more expensive version from the name brand, but if you are a DIYer that just wants to double check from time to time, this one makes way more sense. I am not sure I would build an entire wheelset from scratch with this, but I do trust it to spot check and true.
