not super heavy, but is super strong

I’ve used this bike lock for about a month now. It is very compact and leaves me confident my bike will be there when I return. I like that all metal pieces are covered in rubber or nylon fabric. This protects my bike from scratching.I think the biggest consideration for anyone looking at this product is how heavy it is. This chain is not something you can attach to your bike. You definitely need a backpack or basket to carry this in. It’s too short to really loop around your waist. The shortness benefits the use case two ways– it remains pretty light without sacrificing cut-resistance. It also makes it impossible for an attacker to use a lever within it. I’m not having any of the difficulties others have reported about the key not being accepted. In comparison to the Kryptonite New York mini U-lock, I prefer to carry this one. It feels lighter.

Locking/Unlocking Can Be Inconsistent. Great Lock Though.

The only issue to speak of is that the key will sometimes not turn fully when locking or unlocking. This mainly is due to not inserting the key past all the discs. Most users are probably not familiar with disc detainers and the idea is you usually have to do some rotating and counter rotating with the key in order to get it through every single disc .Once you do that, it should turn pretty smoothly if the chain isn’t being pulled with too much tension.A 10mm hex link chain like this is not something a bike thief is likely to get through discretely. Most only carry cable cutters at best. They’ll need power tools for this. Picking this core is going to require both a specialized pick and a somewhat advanced level of skill & experience. This should be more than enough security for most people.I got my 22″ version around $50. The price a week later is up to over $70 at the time of writing this. It weighs a little under 5 lbs.I think casual cyclists greatly exaggerate the importance of weight. 5lbs compared to your body weight + the bike, + clothing and gear is maybe 2.5% of total weight? Which doesn’t even slow you down by 2.5% if your route is straight and flat, where it’s almost entirely about resistances and not gravity or inertia. If you do a lot of climbing, for sure look into something lighter.

Chain is heavier but more secure than same priced Dlock, some Dry Bike lube keeps keyway smooth

I got the smaller size of this chain, not sure why people complain it’s too small when it’s still about as large as a small~medium ish sized D-lock. Plenty of room to lock around your rear wheel, frame, and a bike rack, with just the tiniest bit of room left over which is perfect as too much extra room allows thieves room to manouvre tools to break the lock. No you won’t be able to lock multiple bikes with the small size, but the weight saving to me was worth it.Perfect for my needs, where I only need to occasionally carry the lock with me, but also need as much security as possible as I leave the bike parked in front of work 5 days a week, Mon-Fri. I bring the chain to work on monday morning, leave it behind on the bike rack the rest of the week, and take it home with me Friday evening to minimise chance thieves tamper with it on the weekends, and incase I decide to commute to the shops on weekend. The lock comes with 3 Keys which is more than plenty – I keep the one with the light on my keyfob, the light is an extremely nice touch, easy to unlock at nighttime. I keep another in my locker at work, and another one at home. Registering the keys online was also extremely fast, but I doubt I’ll manage to lose all 3 keys across the lifespan of this lock but good to have that peace of mind.I find if you use the lock daily, a couple drops of DRY(teflon or ceramic based) bicycle chain lube into the keyway, maybe once a month or two is plenty to keep the disc detainer style keyway turning smoothly, I’ve never ever experienced the lock being hard to open as some other reviews have stated. And disc detainers are far more pick-resistant, as basically no thief has the right tools or expertise to tackle this type of keyway. No bike lock is 100% safe but so far, in the past month at least 2 bikes have been stolen from the neighbourhood, yet there have been 0 nicks or cuts on this lock to indicate any of the thieves have even bothered trying to cut it. Also being close to the front of work, I’m only 5 seconds away if I start hearing a disc cutter or dremel and I’m confident it’d take even the best equipped, and extremely brazen thief at LEAST twice, probably ten times that amount of time to cut through this lock. That plus the fact I’ve scuffed my bike (duct tape/stickers all over the bike frame in multiple spots to cover the brand and model of the bike, keep it dirty, equipped it with cheaper components like tourney or acera altus) should theoretically keep my bike relatively safe from theft. Leave the nice bike at home for weekends and rides after getting home.

Lock mechanism broken/faulty after 2 months

I bought this and thought it was a great lock until the lock mechanism became faulty only after 2 months. The key constantly gets stuck in the lock and takes about 10 minutes to get the lock open with some delicate key turning, it’s like trying to crack a safe! Also I can’t find away to return or get a replacement!

Good chain with one design flaw

If you need a lock chain then this is the way to go. The kryptonite chain that I bought saved me from inconvenience so many times whenever I had to stop at my college campus. It does have one issue where the key doesn’t go through all the slots of the lock and it gets annoying because you have to fumble around with the lock in order to get the key fully set in but aside from that it’s a very high quality lock and it has saved me from many attempted thefts.

    Great for securing security cages.

We have purchased two Kryptonite locks of this style plus one of a now discontinued “U” bar design for use in securing wire storage lockers and are very pleased with all of them. Locking takes some care, particularly if the device is just barely long enough for the application – if you’re looking at a lock that you know to be on the borderline for sufficient length, it would be best to go with the next larger size because they are heavy and not easy to maneuver into tight spots. That said, we are very pleased with all three locks. And we received each one faster from the UK than other items ordered from US locations at the same time!

Just the right length and excellent post-sale service

Yes this is a fairly short chain, which can limit your options when looking for somewhere to lock up. However I have found it is still long enough to go around a standard bike stand, the bike frame and the back wheel. However the plus side is that this chain isn’t TOO heavy (although it’s not light either) and it is easy to carry on the bike by wrapping it once around the seat post.As for the security, it seems pretty good, and I haven’t had my bike nicked after about 2 years. But you never really know. Hope I haven’t just jinxed it!The after-sales support from Kryptonite is excellent. After about a year of use, the polyester sleeve around the chain had started to fray. I emailed Kryptonite and a couple of weeks later they shipped me two replacement sleeves free of charge!

Plastic pieces crack, but lock ok

I’ve had this for a while and it gets a little jostles as I ride around. I just noticed the sliding plastic piece that covers the key hole is cracked and broken on both ends. It doesn’t seem to have any effect on the lock, but for something advertised as tough and impenetrable, I was a little surprised to see it crack so easily. I’ve never had anyone steal my bike tho.

A solution for key insertion/removal issues

Purchased in 2022 as lock for chain link fence gate. I really like the chain/lock except the problem some have mentioned concerning the insertion/removal of the key. Problem solved!I used “Victor Lock De-Icer Lubricant Aerosol” on both the lock and the key. Since the application, the key is easy to use and works the first time most of the time. And usually the second time if the first fails. I do keep the cover closed once the lock is in place.I only found this solution a few months ago (Fall 2025) and we have had rain and a few days/nights below freezing.

    It’s practical.

I like everything about the lock. Second kryptonite lock I’ve own & compare the the kryptonite New York 1210 The size helps with travel & security. Sometimes locking is alittle tight & could be hard turning key & getting it secured.Functions good just be Patient with insert key & locking/unlocking. Cant go wrong with the price. Very sturdy compared to a wired lock from Walmart. I would definitely invest into this lock if you ride a nice bike a lot & want a piece of mind.

    Great Deterrent For Thieves

Good, heavy duty lock. A bit heavy to transport, but a small price to pay for added security for an expensive ebike. The 1090 is just barely long enough for my 20″ ebike due to the thick frame & fat tires.
