The Castelli Estremo WS Skully is for extreme cold conditions. The Windstopper X-fast fabric on the front of the cap and the top of the ears blocks cold wind. The bottom of the ears is covered in Castelli

Good cap but not completely satisfied…
I own several Castelli products. All of them are very good quality. That’s why I like this brand. I needed to update my winter gear and protect head for this year. I’ve been hit or miss before with using cheap quick purchase “whatever works” kind of winter caps. This time I wanted something dedicated to fit right and do the job. $40 was a lot to spend but I looked at this Castelli Estremo closely and knew I would get good quality. The back flap was the feature that I liked and ultimately one of the factors for purchasing. The day it came I put it on immediately. It is one size fit all and at first I thought it was going to be too small but it was bunched up on top so I noticed and spread down over my head and it went nice and it covered my forehead well. The sides needed a little coaxing but they stretched tight and went over my ears. then I noticed the flap in the back… I flipped up. I would stick it down but it might as well not been there. When I raised my head each time the flap catches on my neck and flips itself up. So I don’t get the coverage I thought I was. Okay no big deal I think but that would have been nice if it didn’t act like a ball cap bill and flip out. My head is normal size… All my helmets are size large but honestly I’m probably a medium too. I can wear either size and sometimes have with just adjusting out the tightness or looseness as needed. Here is the reason for only 3 stars… I hated to do that but I’ve ridden several times with this cap in the cold. That’s what it’s for…. It’s not a summer a cap! It does a good job with the warmth factor. The GORE is worth it. It does fit very nice. Better than the other caps and this seems like it’s made to cover properly. So I thought…. The problem it doesn’t cover my ears. (In the house it does) … but once you strap on a helmet and get to moving around and cycling and working you’ll notice (if it’s good and cold) that your ears are exposed and cold. What the heck! I though why is this doing this? I reach with my gloves to pull down each side but it doesn’t matter. They stay if you hold perfectly still but it ends up riding up. It’s just not long enough to stay tucked over. They end up exposing the bottom half of each ear. That’s not what I was expecting out of a $40 cap made for winter riding and uses the GORE fabric. There are other things I could do… Wear a balaclava etc. I know that but those are for extreme days and I don’t always need to go out wearing that. The cap should have been plenty for the normal cold type rides I do but it’s not. I ended up getting a GORE head band and together with the Castelli cap the two work. The cap is still a keeper and as I said it fits really nice (sans the ears) but I think most of my ride times it’s going to have to have it’s companion headband to cover things.

Maybe good if you have a smaller head
As one other reviewer noted the cap runs a bit small. I have a fairly large head and need to usually run the largest helmet offering from a given manufacturer. This cap just won’t come down far enough to cover my lower ears, and it’s my ears that are the most sensitive on those cold rides.Also this cap fits me tightly enough that doubling up with a winter headband would be a tricky game of keeping the headband in place while tugging the cap down, plus I already have skull caps I double with ear-protecting headbands for those winter rides under 35FAll in all, I’m disappointed.

Die Castelli Unterhelm-Mütze hält warm bis unter null Grad und erfüllt damit die Erwartung in ein Produkt dieser Preisklasse. Als großen Vorteil empfinde ich, dass das Windstopper-Material, im Gegensatz zu anderen Mützen, nicht raschelt.Bei der Größe (unisize!) ist Vorsicht geboten. Ich habe einen kleinen Kopf, in Helmen meist Größe S, aber die Estremo WS Skully sitzt schon ziemlich eng. Bei “Dickköpfen” wird das wahrscheinlich nicht mehr passen.Zudem sind die Abdeckungen über die Ohren etwas knapp. Ich habe noch eine Mütze von Castelli ohne WS, da ist das besser gelöst. Zudem trägt die Mütze unter dem Helm recht dick auf, es sollte also bei der Helmeinstellung noch genug Luft sein.Alles in allem aber eine Kaufempfehlung von mir.
